What a Boy's Dreams are Made Of

When I was nearing my teen years I was already an avid reader of those monthly DIY digest magazines; Popular Mechanics and Mechanix Illustrated.

They were portals to all things new technologically. Also, regular features on how to build things.

One item stands out, particularly. 1956 Mechanix Illustrated had a cover feature on the "Speedball Special" a build it yourself wooden sports car.

I think the main attraction is that for what was claimed at $500 you could build your very own. A fantasy, almost within Sisyphean reach. Ain't she a beauty?
